Southern Leyte State University (SLSU) held its first annual Sports Development and Culture & Arts (SDCA) Day earlier today, February 26, at the Multi-Purpose Court (MPC). This event aimed to honor and recognize the Mighty Kingfisher students — athletes, performers, and artists, who contributed and represented SLSU during the RSCUAA 8 2023-2024 and the previous PASUC competition.
The ceremony began with a processional march of colors featuring athletes, performers, their families, student leaders, coaches, advisors, university officials, deans, campus directors, guest speaker Congressman Christopherson “Coco” Yap, Vice Presidents, and the University President.
Dr. Jude A. Duarte, University President, officially opened the event, highlighting the significance of the first-ever SDCA Day, a recognition program for SLSU’s exceptional performance of student-athletes, performers, and artists at local, regional, and national levels.
“I’m truly excited today because, for the first time in the history of SLSU, we will be honoring different athletes and artists who excel in local, regional, and national competitions,” Dr. Duarte stated.
As the event’s highlight, student medalists in various sports, cultural and artistic competitions received awards and certificates, commending their passion for contributing to the glory of SLSU at the local, regional, and national levels. In addition, coaches, advisers, and trainers were also recognized along with the students.
Vice President for Administration and Finance (VPAF), Dr. Dewoowoogen P. Baclayon, introduced Congressman Christopherson “Coco” Yap as the resource speaker, who announced cash assistance for all student medalists coming from his office.
Dr. Marie Khul Langub, Vice President for Student Auxiliary Service, delivered her closing remarks, emphasizing the event’s significance as a testament to dedication, teamwork, and excellence.
“Today is more than just a celebration, it is a reminder of our dedication and teamwork and, of course, excellence in shaping our future,” she said.
