With the aim of honoring the existence of women and women alike, Southern Leyte State U commemorated National Women’s Month Celebration entitled “Babae Ako, Hindi Babae Lang” with a national theme “We for gender equality and inclusive society” March 27, at the Multi-Purpose Court (MPC).

“Despite the advancement of women’s rights and gender equality in recent years, many women continue to face various forms of discrimination, harassment, and violence. We need to continue to fight for women’s rights and promote gender equality in all areas of life,” said Dr. Nelfa C. Gil, Director for Gender and Development, during her welcome message.

“Our celebration today aims to highlight the diversity and the intersectionality of women’s and all gender’s experiences through arts,” she added.

Dr. Gil also stated that the celebration “is a testament to our collective commitment in promoting women’s rights and gender equality.”

Poster making, spoken word poetry, modern pop dance, and lava run competition were competed. The various contests centered on portraying the advancement of women empowerment and advocacy for gender equality. First, second, third placers received cash rewards.

The Supreme Student Council also prepared a video presentation featuring women and members of LGBTQIA+ in SLSU, giving their own impressions on what an empowered woman is and the nature of being a woman, not just a woman.

The activity was organized by the initiative of the Supreme Student Council, in coordination with Gender and Development Office and Student Development and Services (SDS).
